A Pilates-Based Prehabilitation Program for Patients Undergoing Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Cynthia Lau

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of a criterion-based Pilates intervention, supplemented by education and an individualized home exercise program in patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructive surgery.

Methods: In this prospective case series, two participants’ maximal voluntary isometric quadriceps contraction and single-leg hop tests were measured at baseline and following the 6-week program. The Knee Outcome Survey–Activities of Daily Living Scale, International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation Form, Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, and Global Rating Scale were also administered.

Findings: Both participants achieved a quiet knee and demonstrated improvements in their quadriceps index and self-reported knee function. One participant met the objective milestones to be classified as a potential coper.

Conclusion: It may be beneficial to enhance pre-operative rehabilitation programs by adding Pilates exercises to the standard rehabilitation approach.
